Mark your calendars and set those alarms, for one of Boise's and Idaho's yearly traditions that is worth the early wake-up call. The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic is happening at Ann Morrison Park from August 27-31, 2025, bringing five days of colorful hot air balloons to the valley's Labor Day weekend.
When to Watch and What It Costs
The balloon launches begin early each morning around 7:20 a.m. and continue until 9 a.m., weather permitting. Spectators can watch from Ann Morrison Park completely free of charge. Children get a special treat on Wednesday's CapEd Kids Day with free tethered balloon rides on a first-come, first-served basis.
Friday evening offers the crown jewel of the festival, the Nite Glow Spectacular. Starting at 7:30 p.m., pilots light up their balloons against the darkening sky, creating a magical display that ends around 8:45 p.m.
What Happens Each Year
Over 40 hot air balloons from across the country gather at Ann Morrison Park. Pilots arrive at 6:45 a.m. to prepare their colorful crafts for flight. Even those who prefer to keep their feet planted firmly on Idaho soil can experience the magic as spectators often spot balloons floating over downtown Boise, occasionally landing on landmarks including the Capitol building lawn.
The event features live music from local radio stations, food vendors, and chances to meet the balloon pilots. While public balloon rides aren't available during the festival, there are tethered rides for children on Wednesday.
How It All Began
The first balloon gathering occurred at Ann Morrison Park in June 1991; it is a new festival than some may think. Balloonist Scott Spencer and Steve Schmader, President of the International Festivals and Events Association, created the event as part of the Boise River Festival. When the River Festival ended in 2002, the balloon classic continued independently, becoming the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic in 2010.
After Spencer's passing in early 2020, the event and his energy for it continue to fill the park each year. The 2025 event marks the 34th anniversary of what organizers call the Scott Spencer Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic.
This tradition showcases Idaho's special culture and natural beauty like nowhere else. Waking up early this coming Labor Day weekend, watching dozens of balloons rise against Boise's morning sky will prove worth every lost minute of sleep. At least we think so.
